Order from Ooncordia Publishing House, St. Louis, Mo. The author of this series of addresses or discourses is pastor of the Ev. Luth. Ohmch of Our Savior in Oincinnati, O. A few years ago he published a series of meditations or addresses on Amazing Assertions of Ohr'ist Oonoerning Himself, which were quite favorably received. The present volume offers twelve discourses or addresses, seven on notable con- fessions of sin (Achan, David, Peter, the prodigal son, the publican, Judas, Paul) and fiye on notable confessions of faith (Simeon, Peter, the thief on the cross, Thomas, and Paul). Since these confessions were spoken at critical moments in the liYes of the respective men, the discourses are at the same time character studies. We fully subscribe to the statement made by Dr. Dau in the preface of the book: "The chief merit of the book is its sound Ohristian teaching. The author understands thoroughly sin and grace, man's nature and the nature of God as revealed either in the divine Law or in the divine Gospel." The United Lutheran Publication House, Philadelphia. 260 pages, 67\t X97\t. Price, $2.00. This book contains anecdotes and other suitable illustrative material for sermons OIi the Gospel pericopes which every preaeher will appreciate. The human mind thinks in pictures, and the more picturesque the preacher can make his subjeet-mattcr, the more easily and quickly the hearer will get and understand it. That is why Jesus often spoke in parables. In his Sieben Geheirnnisse de.- P1'edigtkunst, Loewentraut says (I" 16) : "Eine del' ersten Anforderungen an einen erfolgreichen Unterricht ist die Anschau- lichkeit. Anschaulich soll del' Unterricht, anschaulich muss abel' auch die Predigt sein, zumal die evangelische, welche volkstuemlich allen, den so- genannten Gebildeten und den einfachen Leuten, den Grossen und Kleinen, den Jungen und Alten, zum Verstaendnis kommen soll. Die Forderung del' Anschaulichkeit beruht ja ueberhaupt auf clen einfachsten Gesetzen des Denkens. Ueberaus lehrreich ist in dies em Betracht, was Prof. Dr. Rabus in seinem fleissigen und geistestiefen Werk Logik wnd System der Wissen- sohaften geschrieben hat: 'Auf del' Tatsache, dass del' Gegenstand des Denkens immer ein Bild ist, und auf cler daraus hervorgehenden Not- wencligkeit, dem Denken ein Bilcl, das heisst, cinen Gegenstand, zu geben, beruht clie Berechtigung des Anschauungsunterrichts, nicht mindel' abeT auch nach sachlicher und form aiel' Seite zum guten Teile die Kunst des Redners: eine ansdmuliehe Rede bleibt immer die instruktivste." Good short stories and examples are a valuable aid in giving a vivicl presenta- tion of one's subject-matter. Of course, it goes without saying that not every sermon should be filled with stories; there are also other ways of giving to the sermon that Anschauliohkeit which every sermon should have. J. H. C. Dr. Macartney belongs to the media,ting FUndamentalists in the Pres- byterian Church of the Northern Convention and is known for a number of secular and theological books, the latter being mostly devotional and homiletical. The present volume is a second printing, the first edition having appeared in December, 1!}27. The book grew out of the author's contemplation of da Vinci's "Last Supper" and contains twelve sermonic lectures on the a.postles (Matthias ha,ving been substituted for Judas Iscariot). These expound spiritual truths, which a.re suggested by the words of Scripture or the lives of the apostles. On some of the apostles Holy Scripture is strangely silent, and here the author is obligecl to gather his material somewhat "from dar." Many of the cor=ents are apt and instructive, though at no place' the writer trusts his readers to cleep waters, but rather keeps them close to the surface of superficial and somewhat trite instruction.
